Chemical Engineering courses include study of the dynamics of process systems. This interesting topic is based primarily on the principle of the conservation of mass and energy. A good understanding of the dynamic response of systems is required if they are to be controlled effectively.

To illustrate the complexity which can result from even a small system, a simulation of a simple process is included, below. This example features two liquid tanks which are connected in series. The tanks are identical and the liquid level in the second one needs to be controlled. The desired level is compared with the actual level in the tank; the difference is processed by a controller, which adjusts the flow of liquid entering the whole system. The tanks are draining by gravity and the liquid flowing out of each has been estimated using Bernoulli's equation
