Thirty years elapsed since CHEMPOR was organized by the University of Minho. The 10th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference CHEMPOR 2008, organized by the Biological Engineering Department, University of Minho, and Ordem dos Engenheiros, will be held in Braga, Portugal, between September 4th and 6th, 2008.  

CHEMPOR traditionally gathers academics, scientists, engineers, manufacturers and end users to discuss recent developments in different areas of Chemical and Biological Engineering. One of the major topics of the conference program is Life Quality, due to the importance that Chemical and Biological Engineering plays in this area. This is complemented with additional topics including Engineering Sciences and Fundamentals, Industrial Processes and Process Systems Engineering. A panel discussion on Chemical and Biological Engineering Education is also scheduled.

CHEMPOR 2008 will provide an excellent opportunity for presenting new results and to discuss the latest research and developments in the field of chemical and biological engineering. We invite you to visit our webpage www.deb.uminho.pt/chempor2008 for the detailed information.

The deadline for extended abstract submission is March 18th, 2008 and these will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee and published in the Book of Abstracts with full papers on cd-rom. Additionally, selected papers will be published after peer-reviewed in journals. Special attention will be given to contributions from industry and to developments featuring collaboration between industrial and academic teams. All presenting authors must register for the Conference before July 15th.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts in March and welcoming you in September 2008 in Braga, a city located in the province of Minho, in the north of Portugal, displaying a Baroque splendour rarely seen elsewhere.

Chemical engineers require a thorough understanding of how gases and liquids flow. Important fundamentals include, for example, the famous Bernoulli equation - a statement of conservation of energy:

P + 1/2ρV2 + ρgh = constant

which is applied along the direction of fluid flow. P is the pressure, ρ the liquid's density, V the flow velocity, h the height and g the gravitational constant.

Energy dissipation, due to liquid viscosity, is often important and the types and effects of viscosity are studied. For liquid flowing in a pipe at low flow rates the flow is laminar, which means that the liquid is moving smoothly along the pipe with layers sliding over each other. The viscous energy loss can be calculated using simple models. As the flow rate increases, however, the flow becomes turbulent, dominated by chaotic swirling eddies. Although this regime is less well understood, if the pipe is part of a reactor, for example, then a chemical engineer will make use of this turbulence to help mix the reagents thoroughly.
